Inspiration

April 3rd, 2003 | by Jason |

Tuesday evening we had a special session of my leadership class in which people were “randomly” selected to present some piece of writing that inspired them. I had written this song earlier in the day, and had the good fortune to sing it to my sixty colleagues.

I go down to the river to pray
To find some peace in these dark days
The cars rush by
Steel shields
And I am separated
I cloak myself in silken wool
And I look within

Can I give thanks
That no black oil clouds will cover my sun?
Can I give thanks
That at 25 my life has just begun?
Can I give thanks
When I know my tanks
Are headed Baghdad’s way?

THEY are responsible
THEY are incorrigible
THEY are corrupted adversaries to my separate peace
THEY THEY THEY

And then I breathe…
And I look inside
And I find the same thing
I do when I look high

For there is a place
Where I can not separate
There is a place
Where we will all know death
And we all share the same one breath

And then I breathe
And then I see
Oh, God, can I be….
One breath

This war is mine
These wars are mine
This peace is…
This peace is…
This peace is.

It was an intense evening all around, which of course required some decompression. My classmates Jennie (fellow student at HGSE) and Jamil (ex-president of Ecuador):

Andreas, who also had to present in class, looked how I felt:
